Middle Main

A neighborhood just a little off center

The Middle Main Initiative

The Middle Main Initiative is a program of Hudson River Housing's Community Building and Engagement work. The Middle Main Initiative extends the mission of Hudson River Housing beyond improving the lives of individuals, to improving the wellness of the community as a whole.

The Neighborhood

The Middle Main neighborhood runs along Poughkeepsie’s Main Street, generally from Market Street to Pershing Avenue, between both arterials (Route 44/55). The neighborhood sits at the intersection of Poughkeepsie’s African American, Latino, and European-American communities.

Incredible energy is generated by the unique and vibrant mix of cultures, ethnicities and history contained in Middle Main. Indeed, the neighborhood has the largest mix of Latino and Caribbean eateries and small retailers in the Hudson Valley; it contains several properties listed on the National Historic Register; it is home to a growing population of artists and young professionals; and it has been said that it contains the largest population of Oaxacans outside of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Middle Main contains significant assets, including:

  • a thriving art community
  • authentic, independently-run businesses
  • a vibrant mix of people from diverse backgrounds - cultural exchange
  • infrastructure, located in the heart of the historical commercial corridor
  • a broad network of community and commercial stakeholders!

We feel that this neighborhood has great #Poughtential and we are committed to working towards realizing it using thoughtful and dynamic strategies.

Hudson River Housing was created in 1982 to address the emerging homeless problem in Dutchess County. Since its formation it has grown to become a major provider of housing, case management services, and more. It has developed 40 affordable home ownership opportunities, and over 800 emergency, transitional, and permanent housing units, and 9 commercial spaces.

The team shown above could not carry out the Middle Main Initiative with out the numerous Community Leaders, or Partner Organizations in Poughkeepsie.
