Middle Main is a walkable historic commercial corridor that has the assets and the infrastructure to be Poughkeepsie’s central provider of necessary and unique services to residents and visitors. Some of its current assets include quality and ethnically diverse eateries, independently run businesses, and a vibrant arts scene. Neighborhood stakeholders wish to see complimentary businesses to enhance their quality of life and attract the thousands of tourists that come to Poughkeepsie each year. Some of these businesses include cafes that serve local students, professionals, and families, specialty shops that serve wide audiences, a book store, farm-fresh local food provider, and thoughtful and creative entrepreneurial ventures that generate opportunities and elevate local developing industries such as food, arts, and technology.
Hudson River Housing is investing 7 million dollars in the reactivation of 22000 sq. ft. mill building called the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory, and is seeking fellow entrepreneurs to join them in reactivating a robust market in the Middle Main corridor.
Investment in the commercial corridor will have an immediate and direct impact on its current challenges. Activating storefronts will mitigate negative activity by claiming a value for the infrastructure as a place and a destination. The immediate effects will be increased foot traffic, employment opportunities, and generating a more appealing environment. In reaction to more activity the local police will have a more active neighborhood to patrol thereby creating a safer environment and diminishing crime.
Through the Vacant to Vibrant Campaign we have partnered with local agencies to support entrepreneurs and investors in making a successful and fulfilling investment. We are doing this by ensuring all local resources and incentives are readily available to them during their development process, and by committing to support their launch into this developing marketplace with our incentives for Made in Middle Main businesses.
