My name is Tori and I am Middle Main’s new Community Outreach Fellow. I am a class of 2018 Vassar College Urban Studies major from Kingston, NY. I like to eat grilled cheese and sing along, loudly, to the radio.
My tasks at Middle Main include running the Poughkeepsie Pop-Up Shop booth at the Arlington Farmers Market, general outreach and just assisting other members of Middle Main as needed. However, one of the biggest things I…Continue

Hello Middle Main! I hope everyone is enjoying the start of their summers. It’s already the middle of June and I can tell that this summer is going to fly by so quickly! There are a lot of exciting projects coming up for the VISTAs so we are busy bees working away to get our projects off the ground.Continue

In my senior year at Marist College I had the opportunity to intern at the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership (CCEL) on campus. This was the first year that the CCEL would be running at Marist and the director, Dr. Melissa Gaeke, was (and still is) determined to make the CCEL a successful and important part of a Marist student's education. Personally, I had a vague understanding of what Civic Engagement…Continue

My name is Tori and I am a sophomore at Vassar College majoring in Urban Studies. For my major it is required to do a semester of fieldwork. Being a local student, I knew that I wanted to do something that helped my local community. I met with the fieldwork director, told him my goals for the internship and then was later assigned to intern with Middle Main.
The first project I worked on coming to Middle Main…Continue

Hey friends! I hope you are not too discouraged by the snow fall we've had early this April. We will have a green spring and a warm summer, I can feel it. When you become a VISTA sign up knowing that for at least one year you are placed with your host site. You think "hey that's not a lot of time," and truthfully it isn't very much time. Yet as I pass the six-month mark of my term of service I can't help but look at my orientation in Philadelphia and think how long ago that was. So much has…Continue

A little more than halfway through my year here and I am…exhausted. In a good way! I am working hard, encountering new people, going to meetings all across town, and thoroughly enjoying the ride. Poughkeepsie really is beautiful in so many ways. From the outstanding-ly old and beautiful historical buildings, to the riverfront, to the crazy amount of available authentic Mexican food and so much more. …Continue

This year, 2016, was the first year I participated and coordinated community service on MLK Jr. Day instead of loafing around. As my supervisor Lindsay said, a "day on" rather than a "day off".
Hudson River Housing provided many volunteer opportunities available for people to sign up and the…Continue

Each month seems to unfold faster than the last here in Middle Main. I am beginning to realize what a pivotal time we (the VISTA’s) are able to be part of. As I watch updates and event pictures appear on Facebook pages and newsletters, the details that make this community unique seem to forge themselves into an increasingly strong network of underlying forces for change. Our residents, artists, business owners -- those who acknowledge progress…Continue

2015 was a very busy and exciting year in Middle Main Poughkeepsie! New community events were launched, new groups formed, new businesses opened, and new investment was made in local real estate. After 6 years of working to create a strong, vibrant, and creative neighborhood of choice, we are truly seeing some results! Thanks to everyone who worked with Hudson River Housing this year…Continue

I hope you are enjoying the unseasonably warm weather we are having this winter. My coat is still in the back of the closet, unused and lonely. There have been many great events, meet-ups and initiatives going on here at HRH and with Middle Main and the Northern Dutchess Initiative. First, I don’t know if anyone noticed, but I have been gone for a whole week! Was I missed? Regardless, I missed you all.
Hudson River Housing is a chartered member…Continue
This past week, myself, as well as Hilary, Anthony, and Dylan (and former VISTA Geoff), packed our bags and hopped on a train to Washington DC! After a frantic race to the train in Penn Station in NY we were on our way! Besides seeing the sights and spending some time out of the office we…Continue
Hi. I’m Javier, and I’ve been volunteering with Middle Main since June. Today is my last day here, and so I think it’s about time I make my first blog post. I guess I would like to briefly describe one of the many very important that I learned during my time at Middle Main.
As a college student studying Political Science, I know and understand a lot of theories about different political beliefs and perspectives…Continue
Hello friends! It has been a busy couple of weeks, complete with community events, workshops and warm weather! Seriously though, I’m excited we don’t have snow on the ground but a little snow during the winter would be nice. I have a couple of updates for you guys.…Continue

Wow! It has been quite a busy couple of weeks here lately in Middle Main. We are halfway through our two week long Dia de los Muertos Celebration and I could not be more pleased with the turnout at all the events. Yesterday was the Grand Celebration and it was a huge success, a large part of that due to the tremendous community members, business owners and organizations leaders who assisted the Middle Main team in organizing the event. The arts and crafts were fun, the music…Continue

Every day presents new events and new opportunities for me to get to know the people of Poughkeepsie better. I am so lucky to be able to spend my time working with people who are truly invested in making my adopted home city shine.
The Community Meet - Ups are simply one part of my AmeriCorps VISTA Assignment Description or "VAD" however they are a…Continue

Hello! It has been a full month since I began my year of service working with the Middle Main Initiative at Hudson River Housing and it has been super busy, but super fun as well! My official title is Community Engagement AmeriCorps VISTA and I will divide my time working in Poughkeepsie and Millerton. In addition to assisting my VISTAs along Middle Main I will be acting as an additional resource to existing community outreach efforts in Northeastern Dutchess. Long commutes but a beautiful…Continue

So it's official, it's been 30-ish days that I have been working in beautiful Poughkeepsie, NY. I laugh/cry a little as I am writing this because it's finally cold enough to wear a jacket and I don't break out in an embarrassing sweat as I climb to the top floor of the building where my office is located.…Continue

At the end of the summer, Hudson River Housing's Community Building & Engagement (CB&E) team held a staff retreat on the beautiful Marist College campus. This gathering was a great opportunity for some team-building activities, reflection on our work, and looking ahead to the future. The results are shown below and we invite your feedback about these Challenges and Priorities. What priorities do you feel we should be focusing on in the coming year?…Continue
