The Middle Main Initiative is committed to developing and empowering residents to work with us to create a strong, vibrant, and creative community. We understand that residents know what is best for their community, and that neighborhood revitalization can only be carried out responsibly with their participation. Over the past 6 years, the Middle Main Initiative has engaged with many dedicated community leaders. Last week we began a new tradition of recognizing outstanding leadership…Continue

Thank you to all who attended the July Community Meet-Up. At the meet-up concerned and active community members joined in passionate conversations about the well-being of the community and worked to link issues and disappointments they had towards our institutions with potential areas of action. It is often said but it can't be said enough - Poughkeepsie is saturated with residents who CARE and who exist in this city with purpose!

THERE IS NO BETTER LIFE LED THAN ONE LED TRYING TO HELP OTHERS SUCCEED.
THE MIDDLE MAIN INITIATES COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP. SO IF YOU WANT A BETTER LIFE COME & LEARN A BETTER WAY. A SELF-CENTERED LIFE IS SHALLOW. IMAGINE A WORLD FILLED WITH PEOPLE CENTERED ON OTHERS! THIS BROADENS HORIZONS AND LOVE FINDS ITS WAY. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK FOR LOVE IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES.
I RECOMMEND THAT EVEN CITIZENS THAT DO NOT SEE THEMSELVES AS LEADERS ATTEND THE PROGRAM AS A…Continue

The past few months have been challenging, but rewarding. Looking back, my tenure as a VISTA has remained true to a chart given to us in our Pre-Service Orientation in Philadelphia called Cycle of Service, which explained that most VISTAS reach their optimal level of efficiency and comfort with their…Continue

As I sit at my desk reflecting on the week I have experienced so far, it has included meetings with neighborhood groups, community organizations, County and City elected officials and people of the general public. WHAT A WEEK! I would be remiss if I did not say in the same breath that I so grateful to have this opportunity to work for the people of this city, a city that is so close to my heart.…Continue

New York winters can be rough, and this year in particular has brought many a foot of snow and some sub-zero temperatures to boot. Luckily, last month, thanks to a grant from NeighborWorks America, I was able to escape the winter chill and head to sunny New Orleans for a Peer Learning Visit to Providence Community Housing, a sister organization within the NeighborWorks America network. The experience was…Continue

A few days ago, 6th Ward Councilwoman, ShaRon McClinton of the City of Poughkeepsie Common Council held a public forum at the Poughkeepsie Public Safety Build at 505 Main Street. ShaRon along with her guest speaker, Attorney Michael H. Sussman Esq. who led a discussion about equality in justice on three levels: Social, Education and in our courts. Mr. Sussman easily navigated this multifaceted conversation, citing his 35 year long career as a civil rights…Continue

How interesting it is that the momentum of the community is climbing to a peak during the ‘dead’ of winter! In a season where Vitamin D and serotonin levels are on the low end, the community is really getting to work! Thank you, 2015! Elizabeth said in our meeting this week “it’s going to be a good year.”
I want to take a moment to offer our applause and support to some community members whose passions for critical issues have…Continue
2014 - what a year it has been! In brief:
In December we were awarded $1,350,000 in funding through the NYS Consolidated Funding Application. This brings our total committed funds to 64% of the total needed to rehabilitate the building. This announcement followed close on the heels…Continue

I am so glad to see HRH focused upon Middle Main. What an interesting and diverse part of the City! The potential in this corridor and throughout downtown are clearly immense. Great to see leadership from the ground up. Keep up the great work.

Before last week I had not realized exactly what it meant to be an Americorps VISTA funded by Neighborworks America, and how fortunate that makes Geoff, Nathaniel and myself. Neighborworks orchestrates several different large-scale face-to-face learning opportunities for their organizations employees, their Americorps VISTAs, and leaders and representatives from the communities that their…Continue

What an amazing first three weeks!
Hello Middle Main friends and family, my name is Nathaniel Almeida and I am the latest addition to the AmeriCorps VISTA crew. Before I get into what I have learned and evaluated in my short time so far, perhaps it is fitting I give those of you who do not know me, a brief story of my history. I am originally from Yonkers, New York. I moved to this great city when I was…Continue

The Day of the Dead Grand Celebration was a great success! Last weekend we filled the Mid-Hudson Heritage Center over the brim with Hudson Valley residents who came together to celebrate the great holiday. It was very meaningful for both those who are from the cultures that celebrate this holiday and for those who are not from the cultures that celebrate the holiday to share it with one another. Everyone was very spirited to either teach or be taught about the many interesting…Continue
