Each month seems to unfold faster than the last here in Middle Main. I am beginning to realize what a pivotal time we (the VISTA’s) are able to be part of. As I watch updates and event pictures appear on Facebook pages and newsletters, the details that make this community unique seem to forge themselves into an increasingly strong network of underlying forces for change. Our residents, artists, business owners -- those who acknowledge progress and help to drive it -- become familiar faces in an ever-growing body of supporters.
Among those supporters, we’ve found students and professors from our local colleges who want to go beyond the classroom and meld their educational experience with community action. The Spanish department of Marist College in particular (my alma mater) has been continually engaging their students in the Poughkeepsie community. They were involved with creating a virtual walking tour of the Walkway Over the Hudson several years ago, they assisted with our Día de los Muertos event this past October by translating materials into Spanish and assisting with our Grand Celebration at Mystic Café, and we are looking forward to their continued participation and energy this Spring in some exciting new projects. **Stay tuned for more on that!**
The more I look around, the more clearly a picture of positive change is painted. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who came yesterday and helped with our projects for Martin Luther King Day.
