2014 - what a year it has been! In brief:
In December we were awarded $1,350,000 in funding through the NYS Consolidated Funding Application. This brings our total committed funds to 64% of the total needed to rehabilitate the building. This announcement followed close on the heels of a $100,000 award from the TD Charitable Foundation. Other funds received this year came from the Central Hudson Main Street Revitalization Program and Dutchess County.
Over the past few months we have interviewed over a dozen potential commercial tenants for the space who responded to our Request for Interest for artisans, makers, designers, food producers, and crafters to join us in this pioneering project. We hope to be able to open our doors around this time next year. Got an idea? We’re still interviewing!
This spring, teens staying at our River Haven Youth Shelter helped design, build, and plant two community garden beds on site, and came on a weekly basis to weed and water. We’re happy to be creating new opportunities for youth to engage in the community and realize the benefits of gardening.
We also hosted over 130 volunteers at the project this year who gave of their time and talents to help install temporary windows in the building, clean up the site, and maintain the community garden.
A new logo was developed for the project with the support of local design firm Mark & Phil. We’ve begun to spread the word about the project through the media, signage, and Underwear Factory swag, like our reusable grocery tote. Get yours here!
We thank everyone who has shown their support by donating to our Windows Campaign. 43 windows have been sponsored so far! Claim your window here.
The richness of the local Poughkeepsie community and the surrounding Hudson Valley continue to inspire our work at the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory. Thank you! Follow us on Facebook for the latest updates!
